A great war-date Union colonel's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Col. Harley H. Sage, 155th Ohio Vols., "Head Quarters, 155th OVI, Camp near Norfolk, Va., Aug. 4, 1864," to George H. Fickhardts, Circleville, Ohio's, secretary of the military committee, in part: "…I have least doubt in the world that one company can be raised and believe that it will be very little trouble to raise two…the men are all anxious to get home…I would suggest the propriety of having War Meetings in the different townships that have companies in my Regt. as soon after our return as possible…anything I can do to assist in raising men to fill the quota of our county will be done cheerfully…we have just returned from a raid into North Carolina. I had two hundred and fifty of my Regt. and 400 of the 1st U. S. Vols. and two sections of the 8th N. Y. Indpt. Battery under my command to act in consort with the 20th N. Y. Cavalry under command of Col. Ford. We established hear Quarters at Elizabeth City, N. C…the cavalry scoured the country for 40 miles around. We…accomplished our purpose and not a man killed or wounded. Some few of the 1st U. S. deserted. We brought with us about one hundred thousand dolls. worth of cotton and about two hundred head of horses. Bully for the 155th O. V. I. We expect marching orders by the 12th…H. H. Sage…". Sage first served in the 43rd Ohio, then the 155th and finally commanded the 179th Ohio. The original stamped transmittal cover. Near fine.
