War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by John Hennessey, 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry, 3pp. quarto, Morris Island, South Carolina, December 20, 1864, addressed to Colonel Hoyt who had previous command of the regiment, and reads in part: “...Since you have left us, there has been much trouble in the Regt. among some of the officers in regard to Genl. Order 153, which as you have seen you will not think strange or worry. Some of the officers mentioned by name have never been known to flinch from duty, while others connected with the same expedition were exonerated. Hence, no doubt, like McClellan’s Reprot, it will take time to soothe their present state of feelings and become convinced that they as soldiers have done their duty, as I know they will do in future...” Fine conditionGeneral Order No. 153 states that the 52nd Pennsylvania while under command of Colonel Hoyt failed in an attempt to take James Island in a bayonett attack.
