A good war-date Union officer's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred K. Nichols, Co. B, 4th Vermont Vols., "Hd. Qrs., 6th Corps, April 1, 1865, to his wife reading, in part: "I wrote you the other evening saying that the next morning we were going to advance on the enemy's lines, but night before last it rained…and yesterday morning the order was countermanded by General Mead, but yesterday Sheridan was fighting lard for the South Side [rail] road but didn't get it and is fighting today, The 2nd & 5th Corps are with him…I shouldn't wonder if we got into it by tomorrow as the campaign is now opened…the N. Y. Herald and Washington Chronicle are confident that we are going to make peace very soon and that there wont be hardly anymore fighting. I hope so…wont it be nice to get home in a few months and have this war over, but I think Lee is going to fight hard…before he gives up…I cant see how see is going to hold out long…". Unsigned, but complete with stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "Mrs. A. K. Nichols, Burlington, Vermont." The very next day Nichol's and his regiment participated in the Union army's attack that broke through Lee's defenses at Petersburg causing the collapse of his army and also killing one his top commanders, General A. P. Hill. Minor spotting, else VG.
