McCRARY, George Washington (1835-1890) was a four-term Republican Congressman from Iowa's 1st congressional district, a United States Secretary of War in the cabinet of President Rutherford B. Hayes, and a federal circuit judge. Manuscript Letter Signed “Geo. W. McCrary,” as Secretary of War, September 16, 1879, 2pp. quarto, War Department lettersheet, addrressed to Dwight Morris of Connecticut, pertaining to proceedings “of a Board of Officers convened at Franklin, Texas, April 6th, 1865, to investigate the loss of public funds for which Major C.C. Clark...was responsible...” Very good condition. Cyrus Curtis Clark served with the 1st Conn. Heavy Artillery and the 14th Connecticut Infantry, he was WIA at Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, and Farmville.
