An unusual post-Lincoln inaugural announcement, ca. February, 1861, 1p. oblong 8vo., written by a certain "J. H. Smith", to an unnamed colonel, reading, in part: "Glorious news! I have just received news…from Harpers Ferry that Lincoln has abdicated the 'Throne' and Seward has resigned. Everything in Confusion at the Capitol. This news is reliable having received it from…Berkley that accomplishes the military company to Chas'town…the 'bursting' up of the administration took place this morning. It is supposed he took up his departure as he came in the…old 'plaid cloak'. Much rejoicing was manifested in Chas'town, so says my informant…yours in victory, J. H. Smith." Heavy fold creases, with minor toning, else VG.
