Pair of war-date Confederate soldier's letters, totaling 2pp. legal folio and 4to., written by Pvt. William T. Cole, Co. C, 21st Virginia Infantry, [DOD Mar. 17, 1863], both written from Winchester, Virginia. First, Feb. 8, 1862, in part: "…if you never got them things that Ned has got [and] if he don't bring them back I will run the law on him. I herd that he was gone to of[f] in a volunteer company…tell Jo to get them things, or burn them up…and not let Ned and the Andrews' enjoy them…tell Charles to help help Jo to get them things as Ned and the Andrews are such men. Tell mother she must try and make out the best she can…tell the Andrews that I don't want them to get on a horse of mine…get Mr. Evans or Mr. Drumight to take him and keep him until I come…W. T. Cole." Second, March 9, 1862, in part: "…you stated in your letter that…I was deaf ad was coming home. I have been very deaf, but I am getting over it now…I don't think I will come home until the 22nd of June which time my time expires. The Yankees tired to drive in our pickets…and failed…their was 250 cavalry, 3 pieces of artillery and one regiment of infantry [who] came against 50 of our cavalry…our cavalry drove them all back. We are expecting the Yankees every day now…that great storm…blowed down all of our tents, trees, fences and every thing…we have 30 pieces of artillery here…W. T. Cole…". Also, included is a rare Confederate "Bright banner of Freedom" patriotic stamped transmittal cover with minor damp stain while the two letters minor toning and soiling, else VG. (3 pieces)
