A good group of three separate official United States army documents, each 1p. 8vo., Arlington, Va., August 1st, 2nd and 14th, 1861, concerning the case of, Pvt. William Murray, 2nd New Hampshire who was sentenced to be hanged for the murder of Mary Butler, on July 27, 1861, after shooting her his his musket. The mutiny of the 2nd Maine Volunteers, reading, in part: "Sixty-two non-commissioned officers and privates of the 2d Maine Regimnent of Volunteers, refused to do any further duty…alleging that they were no longer in the service of the United States…are, with the approval of the General-in-chief…transferred in arrest…as no longer worthy to serve…and will be sent to the Dry Tortugas, in the Gulf of Mexico…to perform such fatigue service as the officer commanding may assign them, until they…show themselves worthy to bear arms…by command of Brig. General McDowell…". And finally, the case of Lt. John M. Conaly, 39th New York (Garibaldi Guards) who was accused of illegally acquiring public property during the army's retreat from the Bull Run battlefield, but found not guilty on August 2, 1861.
