War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, "I am for the Union" patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Harrison Gibble (Gipple in the CW database), Co. A, 79th Penn. Vols., "Camp Wood, Munfordville, Hart County, Ky., Jan. 5, 1862," to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…we where on picket the other day…over the Green river and it rained all the time…our overcoats and caps where all icy. That was the hardest time I had since I left. We seen the rebel pickets about two miles off…where we was posted. They made no effort to advance on us. There were six regiments over the [this] time. The bridge over the [Green] river is nearly done which was blown up by the rebels. It is the highest bridge ever I saw. Its heights is 130 feet above the level of the water. The floating bridge [pontoon] is done…that we went over…I don't like to travel on them…we will move over the river this week and go to Cave City…where the great Mammoth Cave is…the rebels are drawing back towards Nashville…their are over 5,000 in the hospital sick at Bowling Green…H. Gibble. Address to Camp Wood, Munfordsville…Co. A, Hambright's 79th Pa regiment, Gen. Negley's Brigade. N. B. We will have church today. We got a preacher." Near fine.
