War-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, (one with a very fancy artistic rendition reading "NASHVILLE"), by Pvt. Harrison Gibble (Gipple in the CW database), Co. A, 79th Penn. Vols., "Camp Andy Johnson, two miles south of Nashville, Tenn., March 29, 1862," to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…my Co. are guarding a Cecesh house since last Monday. He don't let himself be seen much. He keeps himself in the house nearly all the time. He gave 10,000 dollars towards the rebel army…I had a talk with him…asked him what he thought of this rebellion. He answered…he never thought the south could gain anything by ceceeding from the North etc. He said I am neutral now but thinks that the war will soon close and is hoping for the best. He is a false cecesh…he has a splendid house…and…about four acres of thin woods…he used us well, gave us good raishons all the time…we have to leave here tomorrow…for Franklin 18 miles…our division has left…already with the exception of our brigade (Negleys). He has about 9000 men in his command…when we [first] came here you could not see one engine on any rail road…now they…[are] running again. This shows that the Union men will and must conquer…H. Gibble…our Col. Hambright was dissatisfied with the paymaster. He had nothing but notes to pay us. He sold the gold and silver at 12 per centage. The colonel told him he would report him…yesterday the vote was taken on the allotment money and it was unanimously agreed to draw it at camp and not be delayed of it for month[s] by that operation…tell Hannh that she must try to make out as well as she can till you get it…we will have an organized Post-Office here, then we can get stamps plenty…H. Gibble." VG
