War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Harrison Gibble (Gipple in the CW database), Co. A, 79th Penn. Vols., "Camp Morehead, Columbia, Tenn., April 9, 1862," to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…we where detailed from McCook's division as provost guards at this following points at Nashville, Franklin & this place…our whole brigade at this mentioned places are about 10,000 strong. All the rest of the troops went onto…Corinth…where we think the rebels will make a stand…a desperate fight is expected. All the cecesh citizens of this place are of an opinion that our army will get defeated their…we will have some trouble here. If any thing of a defeat on our side should occur, but…everything is favorable to our men. No. 10 Island is evacuated and the rebel troops got out flanked by our troops so hay they cant reinforce their army. It is reported they are fighting now [battle of Shiloh]. I hope that our men are victorious…then this rebellion will soon come to a close. Florida came back to the Union…(Good for them). We are nearly 100 miles from Corinth. Last Monday night…the long roll…beat and we got ready in double quick to go to town. We lay at the north end of town on a hill…the cannons on top to fire the town if they got too opstropulous [?] The reason we where called out was…Marshall Green opened a store that was full of cecesh goods and the citizens gathered around the store at night and intended to take the contents out…our marshall arrested fifteen of them and put them in jail…that ended the mob. Today we doubled the guard…the people at first did not want to come and take the oath of allegiance, but…it was full all day…in a few weeks they will all be well satisfied with us. They are praising us very highly. It makes us nearly fell proud…H. Gibble." VG
