Vols., "Park Barracks near Louisville, KY., Oct. 15, 1862," to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…I left for Louisville with Buell's wagon train 1500 teams in all. Our Regt. had 5 teams amongst the train and the Col. said if I could take charge of them to keep the wagons and mules in order (in shoeing and repairing wagon etc) I done so till we came to Louisville…a march of 125 miles and an awful one. We hardly had anything to eat…the regiment…had a very hard fight near Perryville, Ky.
