War-date Union cavalryman's letter written by Pvt. Jeremiah H. Obetz, Co. G, 9th Penn. Cavalry, Camp Dunham, [Bowling Green, KY], April 30, 1862, 2pp. legal folio, to his friend Henry C. Gringrich, reading, in part: "…the town of Bowling Green…was fortified [by the rebels] all around and in every direction…if our troops had made an attempt to rout them out it would took a heap of men and many lives lost…that was not the intention is lick them out, but to hunger them out…yesterday we got a full uniform from head to foot and got mustered in for pay…after mustering…our Capt. told us that the probability is that we will be mustered out of service in…8 or 10 weeks, but I hope it may not come so soon as I would…like to be in the service for 1 year…J. H. Obetz…address, Bowling Green, Warren Co. Ky, Company G. In care of J. K. Watltman." VG
