War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Frederick H. Balding, 83rd Illinois Infantry, on fine illustrated lettersheet “Desperate Bayonet Charge at Battle of Winchester, March 23, led by Gen. Tyler”, 4pp. octavo, Fort Donelson, January 24, 1863, with cover addressed to Sarah Balding, and reads in part: “...We do not get our mail so regular as we did some time ago. Col. Low in command at Fort Heiman will not let our mail come up the Cumberland River. ..I was over to Co. C tonight to see the Ellison boys. They are all well. Trance Sexton is well...You spoke of your meetings. I hope much good may be done in the name of the Lord. I am well pleased in the step you have taken in trying to serve the Lord. I hope you will perservere & not give way to the temptations the evil spirit may throw in your way, but constantly in mind your duty & the sacred promise laid down in holy writ. We have preach in our cabin nights by one of our mess, H.R. Golden [Hiland R. Gouldin Wounded 2/3/1863 Fort Donelson, TN]...” Fine condition.
