War-date Union cavalryman's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry Kelly, Co. C, 1st New York Dragoons, "Camp at Harpers Ferry, [Va.], Aug. 8, [1864]," to his cousin Elisha Reynolds, of Belfast, New York, in part: "…we are agoing to have a terrible battle in a short time. We haunt been in any battles since we left Cubatorn [Kabletown, WV, April 10, 1864]. We had two days fight there. Our forces took four cannon and three flags. We see the battles of Petersburg go on. It was a terrible site. We are after the rebels raiders…this war will be over in a short time…tell me where Bill [William W. Sanborn] is. If he gets home. I hope he will have a good time. He has suffered a great deal. The rebs haint got guns enough to scar him if they did hit him. I heard that you went to the Fourth…tell me what John Atherton girls says about me. When I get home I will raise a hell with some of them…H. Kelly." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Overall VG
