Frederick Russell Burnham DSO (1861-1947) was an American scout and world-traveling adventurer. Burnham was born on a Dakota Sioux Indian reservation in Minnesota where he learned the ways of American Indians as a boy. By the age of 14, he was supporting himself in California, while also learning scouting from some of the last of the cowboys and frontiersmen of the American Southwest. Burnham had little formal education, never finishing high school. After moving to the Arizona Territory in the early 1880s, he was drawn into the Pleasant Valley War, a feud between families of ranchers and sheepherders. He escaped and later worked as a civilian tracker for the United States Army in the Apache Wars. Despite his U.S. citizenship, his military title was British and his rank of major was formally given to him by King Edward VII. In special recognition of Burnham's heroism, the King invested him into the Companions of the Distinguished Service Order, giving Burnham the highest military honors earned by any American in the Second Boer War. Timothy John Fitzgerald McCoy (1891-1978) was an American actor, military officer, and expert on American Indian life and customs. He was also known Colonel T.J. McCoy. Three letters written and signed by Burnham to Colonel Tim McCoy to include a Typed Letter Signed, August 19, 1942, thanking the Colonel for “your fine photo of on the beautiful horse ...” ... plus, Typed Letter Signed, October 4, 1942, in part, “... I see the Russians are doing with their artillery exactly what the Indians did when they stalked the buffalo covered with the skin of the wolf ... the eternal priciples of camouflage handed down to us by the Indians are still valuable ...” ... plus, Autograph Letter Signed, September 5, 1943, inpart “... We are working hard now to put our rifle shooting as a must requirement for all Boy Scouts. ... We did prevent the Boy Scouts being taught to sit down to Pee ... We would have a wonderful pool of young men to turn into real soldiers. ... We are back to Indian fighting methods ‘Kill your enemy save your men’....” ... plus, two envelopes to Lt. Colonel Tim McCoy and a photo GI’s around a tank.
