McGURRIN, Manis Augustus (1861-1947) Indian War Veteran who served with the 3rd and 6th U.S. Cavalry during the Indian Wars, fought in the Spanish American War, rode with the Texas Rangers during the hunt for Pancho Villa, fought with the French in World War I and who attempted enlist in the U.S. Army in 1942, but was denied as being “too old.” Nice group of four Typed Letters by Manis McGurrin, and three photographs. The letters are on the “National Indian War Veterans” letterhead from 1935-1942, with good content, includes: “ First Let us ponder on the shock when we learned of the death of our mutual friend Maj. Gordon W. Lillie (Pawnee Bill) which occured Feb. 3, last...I opened a correspondence with Bill in reference to getting the old timers, frontiermen and noted characters fo the early west to assemble for a re-union to be held in some suitable city in Nebraska....” Much more throughout with mention of Doc. Carver who taught him “how to take care of myself during the trying times in conflict with the Hostile Indians...” Very good condition.
