A good West Virginia Reconstruction era letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Mary Church Cobb (and her sister Steptoe), Liberty, [WV], Nov. 4, 1865, to her "dearest grandfather", in part: "...we all are very sorry that Col. White left Liberty…they ought not have left here. We all wanted them to stay so much…there is a big baptist meeting going on here. They having been preaching three weeks constantly…there never was such a revival known in Liberty…all the young girls about here are professing religion. Several of the Yankees professed. The head man was baptized. We have a Yankee man teaching Negroes. He teaches the children in the day and the grown woman at night…the house was so crowded at night that it was a squeeze. Do you envy his employment…Old Berry Saunders is married to a young woman about thirty five years old. She made him give her the greater part of his estate. She was a Mrs. Watson, her husband died in the war. She was very poor. Harriet [servant] is still with us. She has been very imprudent, some rogue has stole all her clothes. You never heard of so much stealing in your life. She has not a suit of clothes left to change with. The rogues are stealing the corn out of the fields…Aunt Mary was here about two weeks ago. Nancy behaved so imprudent Uncle Winkler drove her off. She has no regular cook now. She has engaged a woman in town, but Nancy came here and told her [so] many lies [that] the woman declined going. Ma has a nice good Free Woman of the old issue. She likes her very much…Crawford asks $350 for rent. Pa says he will not give it the whole lot is out of repair. We do not know yet where we will live next year…Mary Church Cobb…". VG
