War-date Confederate manuscript, 1p. 4to., special "safeguard" pass issued to Reverend P. A. Johnson to visit Richmond issued by General Benjamin Huger, "Head Quarters Forces, Norfolk Harbor [Guards], Norfolk, Va., Sept. 21, 1861", issued by the a. a. g. to Brig. Genl. Huger, Major Samuel Smith Anderson (1819-1901), reading, in part: "A safe guard is hereby granted to the Rev. P. A. Johnson to go to the city of Richmond, Virginia. All officers and soldiers belonging to this command are directed and ordered to respect this safeguard and…Mr. Johnson to pass unmolested…". Anderson went on to serve on the staffs of Generals Holmes, Kirby Smith and Robert Taylor. Near fine.
