War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "New Camp near Green Pond," [S. C.], Oct. 5, 1862, to his mother, in part: "…we are now located on a very pleasant spot above the railroad & within two hundred yards of Green Pond's Depot…my present calling is one of much more demanding to myself & to my country than any other that I have ever been engaged in. God grant that the war will soon close & let us go home once more. When I read from day to day of the thousand deaths occurring in an army I feel thankful that…my command have so far escaped so well. Much of that great disbelief you speak of among the families in & around your town would have been saved had the parents & other relation of them who have gone forth to war given them up more unnecessary to their country than they have. I deeply feel for all who have lost a friend or relations by this war. The sacrifice is great…but not to be compared with the degradation & misery which…attend submission to Yankee yoke. Rather than submit to yankee rule we must give up every drop of blood that Southern hearts contain…thank God there is no good probability of our having to yield an inch to them Our success is now likely to be even more glorious than we had at first anticipated. Nothing is said of foreign intervention now & yet…it [is] more likely that we will have such intervention & that soon…A. B. Mulligan." Minor toning, else VG.
