War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Camp at Kenansville, N. C., Sept 6, 1863, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…my little command is exempt from service…we may be considered almost out of service…we occupy a portion of country…which correspond to the neighborhood…of Barnwell Dist. S. C. & about the same distance from the enemy…I went to church this afternoon…Kenansville is reputed to contain a great many pretty girl, but from what I saw today I do not agree…however, we had a good congregation…Frank is well…he goes to Sunday school and church regularly…with others from my Co. I have been out to several places & have made several acquaintances among the farmers & their families…being the oldest command captain in camp, have command of the camp of nine companies, 3 Cavalry, 3 infantry & 3 artillery Cos.. I have appointed an acting adjutant & Inst. Maj. who sign all the passes, etc. for me…the people who live near the camp are willing to do what they can to accommodate us, but they have not the zeal for our cause that our people have. This section is for the Union and now only acquiesce on what they could not , at first, prevent…Alfred…[Sunday night, 9 o'clock, 6th Sept. 63]…we were introduced to two young ladies. The girls here are generally cheer & look pretty well, but stay out [?] etc…A. B. Mulligan." VG.
