War-date Confederate cavalry officer's battle letter, 2pp. oblong 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "In the field 10 mile North of Petersburg, Va., May 18, 1864", to his mother & sisters, in part: "…I am quite well. We have been giving the Yankees [?] all sides since Monday [May 16th, battle of Drewry's Bluff, Va.]…the cavalry have…been very successful. We surprised them on their extreme right on Monday, killed & captured 230 men & a quantity of plunder without the loss of a single man. There is no chance for cavalry to participate in the ground fights…the country being very thickly wooded, but we keep on the wing…we live on raisins, bacon & hard tack excepting when we eat Yankee crackers, cheese, coffee, sugar & etc. I enclose you a letter I took from a captured Yankee on Monday…are pretty nearly all well supplied with Yankee accourments of the finest find…we are now in the rear of the army…the battle commenced at 8 oak. We are whipping them back…don't be uneasy about me….Genl. Beauregard is in command here & Genl. D. H. Hill is my immediate commander. We have completely opened the way from Petersburg to Richmond since last Monday. Genl. Lee is whipping Grant at every point. The Yankees fight under the influence of whiskey & when they get whipped are the most demoralized people in the world. You will hear, but little from our army for some days…if I am wounded you shall hear promptly…A. B. Mulligan." Minor toning, else VG.
