War-date Confederate cavalry officer's battle letter, 1p. large folio, written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Near Atley's Station 10 mile north of Richmond", [Va.], May 29, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…yesterday mooring the bugles blew to saddle & mount…in two hours from that time we were engaged with the first of Grant's columns. All day yesterday Genl. Hampton's command (to which we belong) consisting of several pieces of artillery & about 3000 cavalry were engaged fighting. The enemy's forces were entirely too strong for us but we kept him in check all day. Since last evening our infantry & artillery have been coming up and a general engagement is expected today or tomorrow…the world never saw such troops as our old infantry & artillery boys are. They are hearty young men & so well trained to fighting that they go into it as cool as they would sit down at their own table. My men…have acted fine so far. I lost one man killed yesterday. The cavalry will not…have much to do again until the Yankees are whipped. We will whip them as sure as fate. I have ordered Simon, my boy, to take my trunk, mess chest, cooking utensils etc to either the South Carolina Soldier's Home or the Spotswood Hotel in Richmond & deposit them there for me…& he to take my horse & come back to me…in camp. Could you use Simon at home to advantage?…of yesterday's fight…we lost in killed & wounded about two or three hundred…A. B. Mulligan, Co. B, 5th S. C. Cavalry, Hampton's command."
