Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined Perryville, Wednesday Oct. 15, 1862, 5pp., “John H. Gray’, pencil, inpart, “... Col. Garver received orders to accompany the baggage train to Springfield and the rest of our Brigade, the 105 Ohio, the 123 & 80 Ill moved on under Terill and are said to be badly cut up, although we cannot hear anything reliable. ... we lived by punching holes through tin plates and making graters out of them and making cornmeal. ... marched from Springfield to Perryville and the road I dare say is well perfumed for half of them had the ‘quick step’. ... I saw a dead Rebel this morning lying on the ground decaying. His face was black as coal, and oh how my heart throbbed for him, but I could not bury him. Seven long days has lain there ... Every house in town is filled with the wounded & dying. ...”
