War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Sanford Cluxton, Co. H, 8th Wisconsin Vols., [WIA battle of Nashville, Dec. 16, 1864], "Camp on a Island on Arkansas", March 25, 1863", to his sister, reading, in part: "…it is the lonesomest place that I ever see…we have had orders to be ready to move…the officers says that we are a going up the Yazoo Pass…we will have a hand in taking Vicksburg…there will be some hard fighting there…when Vicksburg is take[n]…the rebels will have to give up for I don't know whare they can go…there will be some hard fighting there before the rebels will give up…there is a grate many of the rebels that is suffering for something to eat…I heard that they was agone to draft all the men that is over eighteen and all that is under forty five…it will make some of them rich men grumble but I hope that they will have to come for they aint any better to fight than the rest of us…I have a letter from William…he wont stand it to be a soldier for it is a very hard life to live…Sanford Cluxton…8 Reg. Wis. Voll., Co. H…". PLUS: a letter, on patriotic stationery showing a spread winged eagle (reminiscent of their mascot "Old Abe") on the globe) , 4pp. 8vo., Jefferson Barracks, Mo., Dec. 9, 1862, mentioning that he had gone to his uncle's while recovering from an illness. Both original transmittal covers are included. Overall VG to near fine. (2 letters and 2 covers)
