War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Sanford Cluxton, Co. H, 8th Wisconsin Vols., [WIA battle of Nashville, Dec. 16, 1864], "Camp near Young's Point, [La.], June 6, 1863", to his sister, reading, in part: "…I have to tell you about the fruit we have ripe peaches and apples and green corn when we are a mind to go a foraging for it…it was almost to hard to boil well now. I will tell you how the Rebels had to live in Vicksburg for the last two months. They say that all they all they had to eat was beef and bacon and corn meal and peas…and they didn't have only quarters rations…for the last week they had to eat mule's meat. Some of our boys went to Vicksburg yesterday and they said that they see some of the meet they had it laid on sticks and the sticks over the fire to smoke. The women had to leave their houses and go into the banks where they they had dug out caves, but they come out as soon as our men got into town…Sanford Cluxton…". Minor toning, else VG.
