War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Sanford Cluxton, Co. H, 8th Wisconsin Vols., [WIA battle of Nashville, Dec. 16, 1864], "Camp near Young's Point, [La.], July 6, 1863", to his brother, reading, in part: "…I have been so busy that I couldn't git time to write. I have been a marching ever since May the 2. We left here on the 2 day of May and marched clear around Vicksburg and come back again. We have had a good deal of hard marching since then and some skirmishing…and some hard fighting. We have taken four places…we took Jackson, Miss…Mechanicsburg and Richmond, Louisiana and now have old Vicksburg at last. The Rebels surrendered it up on the fourth of July. Our men marched into town at ten o'clock Sunday morning and took possession of town and the prisoners. We took four thousand prisoners and with them thar was sixteen generals…and a large amount of heavy artillery…and thirty guns, any amount of small arms and so forth. We have had had to work hard fore it…our sharpshooters killed about one hundred per day ever since the siege commenced. I have had a hand in helping take all these places and I have come out without a scratch…I don't believe that our regiment can report more than three hundred men fore duty…now that is a small regiment. We are camped a half of a mile from the river. We have to use the river water and I don't think it is very healthy…William Banor is well…he is taking care of the colonel's horses and that just suits him…our colonel [John W. Jefferson] got very badly hurt…he got thorn from his horse, stumbled and fell onto him. He has gone to Memphis now…there is a corral of Nigors here of over seven thousand men and omen and children…it is the greatest sight that I ever see. I wish you could see them to satisfy yourself…Sanford Cluxton…". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. Light spotting, else VG.
