Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Chattanooga Tenn.., September 29th , 4pp., “John H. Gray”, in part, “Although we were compelled to fall back after fighting two days, we now lie down in safety end even ‘crow’ over our position. For we are able behind our works & forts to whip Bragg’s army so badly that they will agree to go from us, satisfied that ‘Rosy is the man’. they out numbered us when they fought us or we would not have been sending flags of truce to them, asking privilege to bury our dead and take care of our wounded. Which they at first denied, but on the 27th agreed to take our ambulances, load them with our wounded and bring them to our lines, So on the 28th we delivered 300 ambulances into their hands ... They have not yet brought them back but I presume they will return tonight. ... We lost 16 horses, 2 men killed 19 wounded and 2 missing. .. Our Brigade was 1300 strong and lost 600 men. But we have one consolation that we left as many of the enemy on the field as they hurt us. ...”
