Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Fort Negley, Chattanooga Tenn.., October7th, (1863) 4pp., “John H. Gray”, in part, “we are safe from the enemy in front ... we could live here if the whole Southern Confederacy were assembled in our front. ... There was a great delegation from Indiana. If you were here there would be much of interest to see, the Rebel flags, pickets, artillery, camps fires, signal posts ... Old lookout Mountain rises absolutely to our right to a height of 2400 feet upon which the Rebels have planted fifteen or twenty cannon with which they occasionally remind us of Christmas ... but these fire crackers whiz & buzz through the air and are said to be dangerous ... Gen. McCook and Crittenden are losing luster. ... McCook will or ought to be removed, as his giving way was what let the Rebels in on our right flank Sunday. ... Gen. Thomas stands as ‘Cock of the Walk’. He certainly is the man. ... I did not see any Generals when the bullets were thickest except Gen. Geo. Thomas.
