An unusual war-date Confederate paroled prisoners exchange manuscript document, 2pp. 4to., listing sixteen Confederate prisoners of the 17th North Carolina Infantry who are awaiting news of their exchange in order to fight the Yankees again. The colonel of the regiment, William F. Martin (1821-1881) queries the Confederate Commissioner of Exchange Robert I. Ould, Richmond, Va., "Camp near Kinston, N. C.," on April 25, 1863, concerning the exchange of men in his regiment including several of the sixteen men listed: Pvt. James K. Hardison, captured at Jamesville, N. C., March 2, 1863 [KIA Petersburg, Va., 6/23/64]; Sergt. James A. Oden, captured near Washington, N. C., March 2, 1863 and Pvt. James T. Niblet, captured near Hamilton, N. C., Nov. 6, 1862. He then goes on to ask Commissioner Ould, in small part: "Herewith please find list of men, members of my regiment, who have been captured by the enemy…now on parole…notify me when the exchange was consummated . I have not yet received the notification of their exchange…very respectfully etc, Wm. F. Martin, Col. Comdg. 17th Regt." Signed twice by Col. Martin, including his signature on his endorsement, who assembled the 17th at Plymouth, N. C. in June 1861 and who was POW at Fort Hatteras, N. C. in November, 1861. Near fine.
