Partly-printed Document Signed, "S. Hale" 1p. oblong, Confederate States Forces Head Quarters, York, Pennsylvania, June 29, 1863, and reads "Private Joseph Openshaw 20th Regt. Penn. Militia TAKEN Prisoner of War near Wrightville, Pa. is hereby permitted to go to his home upon his Parole of Honor not to serve in the UNITED STATES ARMY, or in any other military organization under the state or United States Government, nor in any manner bear arms against the CONFEDERATE STATES, until regularly exchanged. By command of Maj. General J.A. Early…" About VG. Samuel Hale Jr. (1839-1864) born in Rocky Mount, Virginia, attended UVA. Capt. Co. K, 42nd Virginia, June 1861 - APRIL 1862. Acting Adjutant 48th Virginia by April 1862, commanded it until WIA at First Winchester. Major and Chief of Staff to his uncle, General Jubal Early, May 1, 1862, and made his AAAG from August to December of that year. He became Early's AAIG on January 21, 1863 and was killed in action at Spotsylvania in May, 1864.
