MALLET, John Williams (1832-1912) Irish-born chemist who came to America in 1853 and eventually became the head of the Richmond ordnance labs. Enlisting in an Alabama unit early in the war, he became a staff officer to Robert E. Rodes. In 1862 he was given the rank of colonel of artillery and assigned to the labs where he fought against shortages to aid the Southern military effort.
