GORDON, John Brown (1832-1904) CSA Maj. General. His army service began with election as captain of a mountaineer company known as the 'Raccoon Roughs' and ended as a corps commander at Appomattox. During the battle of Sharpsburg, he was so severely wounded in the head that only a bullet hole in his hat prevented his drowning in his own blood. Led a brigade at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and crushed Grant's line at the Wilderness. He was three times elected to the U.S. Senate (1873-1880) and (1891-97), and was once governor (1886-90). He was also the first commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans. War-date Manuscript Document Signed, "J. B. Gordon Maj Gen." 1p. 25"x8", Bunker Hill, Virginia, August 31, 1864, being the "Monthly Return of Gordon's Division Commanded by Maj. General J.B. Gordon." It lists aggregate totals for soldiers by brigade and rank as well as those who are present and absent. The brigades listed are those belonging to Evan's, Terry's and York's. Totaling 3339 of which 2764 are listed as effective. Total present and absent is 14,497. Note by R.W. Hunter A.A. General reads "Under the head of 'alterations' the 171 marked 'deserted' have been borne upon the rolls up to this time & dropped there being no probability of their voluntary return." Extremely scarce. A week before this document was signed General Gordon was wounded above the right eye at Shepherdstown.
