PENDLETON, Alexander Swift "Sandie" (1840-1864) was an officer on the staff of Confederate Generals Thomas J. Jackson, Richard S. Ewell and Jubal A. Early during the American Civil War. War-date Confederate officer Autograph Letter Signed "A.S. Pendleton" 4pp. octavo, "In camp" April 24, 1864, addressed to his mother, it reads in part: "...Just as I am starting to church at Orange C.H. I write a line to thank you for your letter...and to show you that my love for flowers is still alive I put in a few wild pansies which I came across away off in the field...I am very thankful for the pain you took in my childhood to instill this love into me. It has proven a great source of pleasure to me in the past & will serve to gladden many an hour in the future...The weather is lovely now, & while it is preparing us for the great struggle which will in all probability take pace here in a few days...Ned Lee went down Friday...He took charge of Mrs. Ewell & Miss Hattie Brown so that we are now without the pleasure of any ladies here....Dr. Mimegoode preached at Orange today...I am very much surprised of what you tell me of Col. Tom Marshall's behavior. I always thought him a model of a gentleman. For the rest of the cavalry their conduct is not be wondered at as they are none of them used to ladies of the first style, and the girls love nothing by being free from their attention. I trust your information about Hugh McGuire's habit is at fault..." Fine condition. The Battle of the Wilderness, fought May 5-7, 1864, was the first battle of Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Virginia Overland Campaign against Gen. Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War. Both armies suffered heavy casualties, around 5,000 men killed in total, a harbinger of a bloody war of attrition by Grant against Lee's army and, eventually, the Confederate capital, Richmond, Virginia. The battle was tactically inconclusive, as Grant disengaged and continued his offensive.
