SHERMAN, William T. (1820-1891). Union general famous for his march through Georgia to the sea, accepted the surrender of the last major Confederate force under Johnston. Autograph Letter Signed, "W.T. Sherman Maj. Gen. Comdg.", 1p. octavo, pencil, In the Field, February 16, 1865, on "Head Quarters Military Division of Mississippi" stationary addressed to Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard, with good military content while chasing Johnston's army and reads in most part: "...I see the Bridge on Broadburg. It is very important you effect a crossing tonight...take up engineer pontoons to finish one across the river...Slocum can cross River...use his bridges at one day interval…" VG. At this time Sherman and his army were south of Columbia, South Carolina, making their way north and forcing Johnston into North Carolina.
