10th Texas Cavalry Parole and Grouping

Group of items pertaining to H.L. Henderson, a member of the 10th Texas Cavalry, who were organized with 900 men in 1861 and after fighting in Virginia was assigned to General Ector's Brigade in the Army of Tennessee. They participated in numerous battles from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, and endured Hood's winter operations in Tennessee. At Murfreesboro they lost 34% of the 350 engaged. Very few of the 10th Texas Cavalry surrendered to Canby on May 4, 1865. This nice grouping includes: partly printed parole, 1p. oblong octavo, Meriden, Mississippi, May 9, 1865, and is signed by George Leonard Andres (1828-1899). This document reads in most part: "...H.L. Henderson 2d Corp. of H Company 10th Regiment Texas Cav. dismd. C.S.A., residing in Smith Co. Texas having been with the approval in the proper authorities, paroled, is permitted to return to his home, not to be disturbed by the United States authorities, so long as he observes his parole and the laws in force where he may reside…" Fine. Rare...plus; Two voter registrations, each 1p. oblong octavo, September 16, 1865, Smith County, Texas, one issued to H.L. Henderson the other to his brother William Henderson, and certify that they have "taken the oath of amnesty as set forth by the President of the United States in his Proclamation of May 29th AD 1865…" Signed by the Chief Justice and Clerk of the County. Both VG...plus; Voter Registration, 2p. quarto, July 15, 1867, for H.L. Henderson, and stating that he has "not been disfranchised for participation in any rebellion or civil war against the United States, nor for felony committed against the laws of the United States…" or taken the oath of the United States and "afterwards engaged in insurrection and rebellion against the United States, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof…" VG. A nice 10th Texas Cavalry grouping, with rare parole.
