A heart-felt Southern mother's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by "Fannie", the wife of Capt. Alexander A. Wallace, 1st Georgia Vols., Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 18, 1861, concerning their son's enlistment in Confederate service, reading, in part: "…I did not intend to write…but circumstances have transpired that make it necessary…George came out yesterday evening and announced his intentions of joining a new military company and going to the coast. They have been accepted for six months. The company is made up of boys, commanded by Albert Howell and have been in camp here about a week. They left this morning for their place of rendezvous at the junction of the Gulf & Florida rail roads. George could not tell me where that was. I advised George not to go without first consulting you & he told me it would distress you…he said my consent was enough which however I could not give…he then said he would take the responsibility upon himself, that he had tried to get my consent & failing to do so he would go without it. He was so determined on going that nothing I could say would have prevented. He did not however leave with the company, but with a few boys…he is anticipating a nice time on the coast…I have been very much troubled about it, Darling, not knowing how to eat…he would never be satisfied until he tried the life of a soldier…it may teach him a lesson he will never forget…Charlie regrets he is not able to take his place at the Depot. Dr. Brown has promised Charlie & assist him in getting a discharge, says he must not think of going back…he still complains of his hip and legs. I have heard nothing from Bro. Jesse…he was in Nashville which accounts for his not replying to my letters…Fannie." Minor toning, else VG.
