A rare early war-date, ca. 1861, Talladega County, Alabama petition signed by Confederate Brig. Gen. WILLIAM H. FORNEY (1823-1894) who as commander of the 10th Alabama, at Gettysburg, was so riddled by wounds that he was left upon the field and became a prisoner. Along with Alabama's Provisional Governor in 1865 LEWIS E. PARSONS (1817-1895), beseeching the governor of Alabama, Andrew B. Moore, to appoint Joseph D. McCann captain. McCann became a captain in the 6th Alabama Battalion Infantry, reading, in part: "The undersigned…present to your excellency the claims of Joseph D. McCann of…Talladega for an appointment of a captaincy in the Regular Army of Alabama. We are well acquainted with Mr. McCann and know him to be a gentleman, fully qualified to fill the position we ask for him. He was for sometime at West Point Military Academy, was in the Mexican War and held the rank of a lieutenant…we ask you…to confer upon him the appointment of captain…John T. Bell [Captain 14th Alabama]…Charles Carter…LEWIS E. PARSONS [Alabama's Provisional Governor, 1865]…WILLIAM H. FORNEY [CSA Brigadier General]…J. H. Wright [lieutenant 4th Alabama Cavalry]…W. F. Bush…S[tephen] F. Hale [Lt. Col. 11th Alabama Vols.]…". Minor toning, else VG.
