ELY, Alfred (1815-1892) was a U.S. Representative from New York. He was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1859 - March 3, 1863), serving New York's 29th congressional district. Ely was captured by Confederate forces while observing the First Battle of Bull Run. He was taken to Liggon Company's Tobacco Warehouse and kept there five months until exchanged for Charles J. Faulkner who was held at Fort Warren. Free Frank boldly written at the top of the orange cover, "Alfred Ely., M.C." fine. The cover is to Dansville, NY., with a Washington DC, Aug. 8, 1861 CDS.
