SEMMES, Albert Gallatin (1810-1883) He was a member of a notable extended family that included Confederate Admiral Raphael Semmes (commander of the ship Alabama) and Thomas Semmes, Confederate senator from Louisiana., and was half-brother of Paul Semmes. War-date Confederate Autograph Letter Signed "A.G. Semmes" 4pp. octavo, New Orleans, February 15, 1861, addressed to his brother General Paul Semmes who was MWIA at Gettysburg, and reads in part: "...Spencer S. Semmes of this city has addressed her & I infer are engaged. Pauline will write you & Sister fully. This I have enjoined on her as a duty which of course she feels. This engagement was not anticipated by me or wife nor did I even suspect it or should have written you at once.... His father is Commander Semmes of the U.S. Navy a very distinguished gentleman as you know. He now resides in Washington....He [Spencer] is not a brilliant man in the general use of the term, but he is a sound reliable man & I think could be depended on under all circumstances..." Paul Jones Semmes (1815-1863) was a banker, businessman, and a Confederate brigadier general in the American Civil War, mortally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. Samuel Spencer Semmes (1838-1912) graduating at the law school in New Orleans, La., in 1860, in which city he was residing and practicing his profession when the war broke out. True to his convictions, he enlisted in the Confederate service, as second lieutenant in the First Regiment of Louisiana Infantry (regulars), commanded by the late Gen. A. H. Gladden, and was promoted to the rank of captain. He went through the war under Gen. Bragg, in the Army of the Tennessee, and was a participant in the battles of Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta, Etc.
