War-date Confederate non commissioned officer's battle letter, 1 1/2pp. folio., "Camp near Richmond", July 6, 1862, to his Aunt Elizabeth Caroline (Thomson) Steele, wife of 1st Lt. Abner Newton Steele 11th Alabama who was killed during General Longstreet's assault upon the Union position at the battle of Glendale on June 30, 1862 reading, in part: "I take the opportunity to write you a few lines…I am well…what had become of Uncle Newton's trunk. I carried it to the First Ala. hospital and put it in care of the ward master. I packed all of his clothing…in the trunk…the ball that shot him I pt in the corner of the trunk…Uncle Newton has often requested me to send him home if he died or got killed…I tried to get transportation for him but I could not get it and I telegraphed to Grand Pa to come after his remains…tell him when he comes to come to see me before he goes back. I am now at the camp near Richmond but I expect to start back to the Rgt. in the morning which is twenty-five miles from here…our Co. went in the field with thirty-seven men and there was five of us come out safe. We have bin in three fights and our Co. has had forty nine killed and wounded. Our Capt. was killed on the field. Our Co. is ruined for ever. You must tell Pa that he must come to see me.
