A rare Confederate partisan's letter, 12pp. 8vo., "Hilly Retreat", [Tenn.], Aug. 1st, (ca. 1863), written by a Southerner (indiscernible name) farm owner who recalls fighting in a bloody battle, returns home to attend to his farm while giving his brother advise on employing his slave force, reading, in part: "We have had quite a battle here. It was fought day before yesterday to a successful termination. The day previous…29th July we received intelligence of the hard struggle for the morrow & with…attack all in readiness, early sought…for the next days struggle…we were aroused from our rest & hurried to the field of strife…the conflict soon began. Steadily…success mark[ed] our efforts…through the cool morning…till the sun was just…beneath the western horizon…victory was ours…the field was scoured & all…weapons used in the long battle were carefully gotten together & brought to a place of safety…while the enemy was left strewn over the field…wounded, bleeding, dying, uncared for…too weak gather sufficient struggle again…next our scarred & bruised horses were taken to the water & thoroughly cleansed…& cooled off after their valuable assistance during the day…with wounds well-dressed hey rest on a good pasture…yesterday our [?] work was finished in all the cotton & now one good rain is wanted…with your force keep it husked up at night & wet days. You might take the shuck…off by working them an hour after supper. I presume the force could not object to assisting in this way…". Negligible paper loss effecting last sheet, else VG.
