War-date Confederate gentleman's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by John W. Crenshaw, Hamburg Station, Perry Co., [Alabama], June 26, 1863, to Governor John Gill Shorter concerning the legitimacy of a Confederate soldier's story, possibly deserter Pvt. William Davidson, 2nd Battalion Kentucky Cavalry, for not being with his command, reading, in part: "I take the liberty to address you in regard to a gentleman who stopped…at my house. He represented himself to be Mr. Wm. Davidson from Georgetown, Ky, that on his way out of Ky…to join the Confederate army he was with his horse precipitated over a precipice, which fall has…crippled him from entering the service…he spent some weeks…in Montgomery …he had a letter of introduction to yourself which was so far satisfactory that you gave him one to Gen. Maury at Mobile, which…he showed us (sealed). His appearance and conduct…led us to place confidence in his statement. We merely wish to ascertain the truth of what he stated…he is in pursuit of some relations in Green Co…John W. Crenhsaw, Hamburg Sta., Perry Co., Ala." Near fine.
