A great war-date Confederate Poet's poem, 2pp. 4to., Richmond, Va. 1863, entitled: "Mississippians Never Surrender", written by Southern poet and author James D. McCabe, Jr., (1842-1883) who became a popular writer of more than 30 works including histories, biographies, plays and, of course, poetry, reading in part: "Hurrah! there's a shout on the Southern breeze…so wild and full of defiance proud…it comes from the men with the iron hearts. From the women true and tender. "Go tell your chief we'll die at our posts-Mississippians never surrender." Virginia, hear! Tis the same proud cry…when the warm life-blood of the hero band, gushed out in immortal fountains…from the heart of each brave defender when Leesburg hills were drenched with gore-Mississippians never surrender." From Shiloh's plains it roared on high…o'er the roar of battle…O'men of the South…nerve your arms to deeds of glory…e'er teach your loved ones like heroes bold to die but "never surrender." Minor tones, else VG.
