War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Bartlett Ellis Scarborough, 31st North Carolina Infantry, Died of Wounds received at Drewry's Bluff on May 15, 1864, 4pp. octavo, Camp 31 NC Troops, James Island, September 12, 1863 with cover addressed to a woman in Fayetteville, NC, it reads in part: "...You have seen an account of all the fights around Charleston ere this time, and also a true account of the affair about the sinking of that vessel. You asked me something about how long I thought the Yankees would stay around here and how long before they would repent of their sins.... the time is fast approaching...They are very still today and have been for several days that I can't tell what will be the consequences, though I am in hopes that they have repented and will let the boys come back to the good ole North State, for I am very anxious to come back once more. Our fare is very common here and our duty is hard.... You must not let the Yankees get you if they do make a raid in N.C. for I don't want villains to get any of the ladies of my acquaintances, neither do I want them to take any other. I have been looking for them to come up in North Carolina for some time. I expect they will soon have possession of all the lower part of the state for we have not troops in N.C. at present to save if from the enemy.... I remain your sincere friend till death...."
