General John Bell Hood, "Head Qrs., Army Tenn., In the field 9 miles from Summerville, [Somerville, Alabama.], Oct. 25, 1864," secretarial copy to Major Charles W. Phifer, in part: "It has been reported to me that there are unattached Cavalry companies in that portion of North Alabama…within the limits of this Dept. I hereby direct the officers commanding such companies to report without delay to Maj. Phifer…as he may designate for the purpose of Regimental organization…J. B. Hood General." Expected wear, else VG.
