A late war-date Alabama's provisional governor's related letter, 1p. 4to., written by Aaron Burr Cooper (1800-1887) who would become a delegate to the Alabama 1865 Constitutional Convention and then senator from 1865-1866, McKinley, Marengo Co., [Alabama], June 27, 1865 to Provisional Governor Lewis E. Parsons, in part: "I learn you have been appointed Provisional Gov. of the State [of Alabama]…it is feared you will have an unpleasant time of it…in bringing order out of confusion…you must…certainly have to meet…old political opponents will all together render the position unpleasant & difficult. I feel confident you will exert all your powers and do what is right and…see the state return to all her rights & privileges under your guidance…what course has been chalked out. What policy [does] the Federal Govt. intend to adopt towards us. Whether there will be a convention etc…I am the lore earnest about this because it may determine my own course. Some of my friends begin to talk about the election & mix my name with it… [if it] so happen that I can be of any special service…to extricate our country from its present distracted condition I would do much. Please write me…I would visit Montg. to see you…A. B. Cooper." Overall VG
