A complete and authentic issue of The Herald of Freedom, Boston, August 28, 1789, deskbound, slightly rolled lower spine not affecting the reports. From the front page, a President George Washington approves an act "To Establish an Executive Department to be denominated the DEPARTMENT OF WAR". Also, a second act approved by President George Washington, "For the Establishment ... of Light-Houses ..."The Department of War was first occupied by Knox. the Department continued through 1947 when the name was changed to the Department of Defense.
