MOORE, Archie (born Archibald Lee Wright; 1916-998) was an American professional boxer and the longest reigning World Light Heavyweight Champion of all time (December 1952 - May 1962). He had one of the longest professional careers in the history of the sport, competing from 1935 to 1963. Nicknamed "The Mongoose", and then "The Old Mongoose" in the latter half of his career, Moore was a highly strategical and defensive boxer, with a great chin and durability. Archie Moore ranks fourth on The Ring's list of "100 greatest punchers of all time". Moore is rated by prominent boxing website Box Rec as the 2nd greatest pound-for-pound boxer of all-time.[1] Moore was also a trainer for a short time after retirement, training boxers such as Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and James Tillis. Autograph Letter Signed "Arch Moore" 2pp. folio, May 23, 1965, on facsimile of an article by Larry Merchant about him from April 29, 1965. The letter reads in part: "...At the moment I'm coauthoring a fight story that has promise its part fable - part fable part truth. The type the T.V. views and the fold who use to flock to the theater like, or at used to. I'm doing the fight portion description the author is a renowned writer of another era - wrote the Italian tragedy his name is Nicholas Coringa. I had to cut the part where he named the Mafia, and of course I did not know why he named those people - not by name - but any mentions of the Mafia would cause friction from perhaps someone not even remotely interested in their affairs...The story is rich enough in pathos without name calling...Draw me up a chair and view the Slaughter of Clay..."
