THOMPSON, Meriwether Jeff (1826-1876), nicknamed "Swamp Fox," was a senior officer of the Missouri State Guard who commanded cavalry in the Trans-Mississippi Theater of the American Civil War. The CSS General M. Jeff Thompson (ca. 1862) was named after him. Autograph Letter Signed "M.Jeff Thompson" Chief State Engineer, 2pp. quarto, Steamer Pagoud, New Providence, February 21, 1874, addressed to Charles Clinton, and reads in part: "...From the reported carvings of the river banks, and the fact that many of the levees in his district are completed and await a final estimate, I was compelled to leave the city and leave all matters before the legislature...To make the surveys that will enable the Commission of Engineers to intelligently locate the large levees that will have to be built up in this country next season will require much expense, or the many thousands lost by injudicious location will be the result. The Levee system is the vital and most important by far in the state..." 2nd page laid on thicker stock, else very good condition.
