WASHBURN, Jr., Israel (1813-1883) was a United States political figure. Originally a member of the Whig Party, he later became a founding member of the Republican Party. In 1842, Washburn served in the Maine House of Representatives. Autograph Letter Signed "I. Washburn Jr." as Governor of Maine, 1-1/2pp. octavo, on State of Maine, Executive Department letterhead, September 19, 1862, it reads in part: "...I did not know before that you had encountered any financial embarrassments. I pray you may be safely out of them. I doubt much for my experience in such matters, whether Gordon's discharge can be obtained, but I have written the best letter I knew how & hope it may not be in vain...." Very good condition.
